More and more people are looking to start up their own business. It can be intensely rewarding but it does not suit everyone.
Consider these five areas before taking the plunge:

1. Timing. You may have a brilliant idea and be prepared to work hard to see your vision fulfilled. Is the timing right for you to set up on your own though? You need to look closely at your family and personal circumstances before embarking on a new way of life. Can you afford to devote your energies into a new business venture?

2. Finance. Starting a business costs money and income may well not roll in for weeks or even months. You need to take serious stock of your finances before giving up your day job. Good financial planning is crucial.

3. The market. Before you start up you need to establish that there is a demand for your product or service. That means having a good look at what your competitors are doing and asking why customers will come to you rather than them. Offer something different, better or corner a niche market.

4. You. Not everyone is suited to running their own business. Obviously you need ambition and skills in your chosen field, as well as not being afraid of hard work and long hours. You also need to be a good communicator, though, to get your ideas across to colleagues and clients. You’ll need to be a team leader too, prepared to be the disciplinarian when needed.

5. Your support. You are going to need a strong support network around you. Make sure family, friends and colleagues are fully on board with your plans and understand the demands your business may make on you. Having said that, they will also need to help you maintain a healthy work-life balance.
